The Epsom Handicap is a Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held each year at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney. Run over 1,600 metres under handicap conditions, it is open to horses aged three years and older.

When is the Epsom Handicap 2025?

Held this year on 4th October, the race is one of the key mile events of the spring carnival and attracts a strong field of seasoned milers and emerging stars.

Race History

The Epsom Handicap was first contested in 1865, making it one of Australia’s oldest and most celebrated races. Over more than 150 years, the race has evolved into a cornerstone of the Sydney Spring Carnival, etching legendary names into the record books.

In 2024, favourite Ceolwulf justified his market support, charging home late to claim the Epsom in impressive style.

Previous Winners of The Epsom Handicap

The 2024 winner was the favourite Ceolwulf whilst in 2023 ∫ won in a tight finish. In 2022 the judge couldn’t split them as Ellsberg and Top Ranked dead heated.

Other Winners

In 2021 we saw a first Kiwi winner in over 40 years as Probabeel claimed victory. Other recent high profile named winners include Happy Clapper in 207 and Hartnell in 2018.

Odds & Tips for The Epsom Handicap 2025

Despite a poor draw Autumn Glow for trainer Chris Waller remains a solid favourite for the race at about $2.20. Clearly the best horse in the race and if Kerrin McEvoy gets his tactics right she is very much the one they all have to beat.

Our experts believe the draw might be too much of a challenge and have selected Willydoit as the selection. With a 100% strike rate of 2/2 over the distance and having reeled off some very good sectionals in his last outing, this gelding could spring a surprise and beat the favourite for Ciaron Maher.
