What is the All-Star Mile?
The All-Star Mile 2025 will be raced on Saturday, 8th March 2025 at Flemington Racecourse. This prestigious race, which saw Pride of Jenni take out the win in 2024, is one of the highlights of Melbourne’s Autumn Racing Carnival. The race is over 1600 metres and is run under Weight for Age (WFA) conditions. With a decent prize pool of $2,500,000, it attracts some of the best middle-distance horses from across Australia and New Zealand.
What makes the All-Star Mile unique is its selection process, with entries coming from nominations, ‘win-and-you’re-in’ races, and wildcards. The field is capped at 16 runners. The race has recently been awarded Group 1 status adding to its prestige on the racing calendar..
Previous All-Star Mile Winners
In 2024, the All-Star Mile was held at Caulfield, where Pride of Jenni, a 6-year-old mare, claimed victory with jockey Declan Bates aboard. The previous year, 2023, saw Mr Brightside, a 5-year-old gelding ridden by Luke Currie, take out the win at The Valley.
In 2022, Zaaki, a 7-year-old gelding trained by Annabel Neasham and ridden by Jamie Kah, triumphed at Flemington. Mugatoo, a 6-year-old gelding, took the 2021 title at The Valley, with Hugh Bowman aboard. In 2020, Regal Power, a 4-year-old gelding trained by Grant & Alana Williams and ridden by William Pike, won at Caulfield. The inaugural race in 2019 at Flemington was won by Mystic Journey, a 3-year-old filly, with Anthony Darmanin in the saddle.
Tips and Odds for the 2025 All-Star Mile
Without last year’s winner, Pride of Jenni in the field the current favourite in the futures market is the winner from two years ago and runner-up last year, Mr Brightside at $4. After him is Via Sistina currently at about $6. Broadsiding, Ceolwulf, and I Wish I Win all are paying at $8, while Antino is at $10. Another Wil is available at $12, with Buckaroo at $13.
Savaglee and Joliestar are generally listed at $14 and $15 respectively, and Light Infantry Man is quoted at $16. The Pickabookie.com.au selection for the race is Via Sistina. Since arriving from Europe, the mare has continued to improve under Chris Waller and although probably slightly better over 2000m the Kiwi-trainer will have her fit and ready to strike over the 1600m in March.
