The Australian Cup is a Group 1 race held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, in early March. It’s run over 2,000 metres and is open to horses aged three and older. The race is one of the marquee races in the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

With a long history dating back to 1863, the Australian Cup is one of the premier staying races in Australia and a significant lead-up to other big races later in the year such as the Melbourne Cup. The race is worth $2.5 million and was first won by Barwon.
Recent Races
In recent years horses have won the race two years in a row, in 2024 Cascadian was victorious having also prevailed in 2023 as well. Also, Harlem achieved this when claiming victory in 2018 and 2019. Other notable winners have included Duais in 2022 and Fiorente in 2014.
Latest Form & Odds
With Ciaron Maher’s Pride of Jenni coming out of retirement and proving herself to be in exceptional form with another stunning front running performance in the Peter Young Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield.
She is currently $3 favourite and if that recent run is anything to go by she’ll be hard to beat. Also fancied in the early market is Zardozi, $9, which finished second to Pride of Jenni when last out.
Trainer Chris Waller has Atishu in the field at $8 and with Ciaran Maher also have two other runners, Light Infantry Man at $9 and Middle Earth at $5.50 also in the reckoning.
