What is The Australian Derby?

The Australian Derby is a Group 1 race for three-year-olds, held annually at Royal Randwick in Sydney. Run over 2,400 metres, it’s typically held in April during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. With a prize pool of $2 million AUD, it was first run in 186 and forms part of the Triple Crown series for three-year-olds, alongside the Rosehill Guineas and the Randwick Guineas.

Recent Winners

Last year’s winner was Riff Rocket trained by Chris Waller and wow was he impressive. Going off as the $2.10 favourite you could hear the roar and celebrations across the Blue Mountains when James McDonald delivered his runner on the heavy track. Other recent winners have included Major Beel, Explosive Jack and It’s A Dundeel.
