The Bletchingly Stakes 2025

What is The Bletchingly Stakes?

The Bletchingly Stakes is run in late July at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne. This Group 3 feature is contested over 1200 metres under weight-for-age conditions on a left-handed turf track, offering a total of $200,000 in prize money. As the final Group race of the winter Melbourne racing season, it often serves as a springboard for horses targeting early spring campaigns.

Race History

Named in honour of the outstanding racehorse and influential sire Bletchingly the race carries strong historical significance. Bletchingly had a brief but brilliant career on the track, winning four of his five starts, including the Galaxy at Randwick. His legacy endures through his impact at stud, and the race now stands as a tribute to his contribution to Australian racing.

Recent Winners of The Bletchingly Stakes

Recent editions of the Bletchingly Stakes have seen a strong mix of sprinting talent emerge victorious. In 2024, Recommendation claimed the title, following Ingratiating’s win in 2023 and King Of Sparta’s success in 2022. Sansom took out the race in 2021, while Godolphin’s Viridine was the winner in 2020.

The race has also been won by several high-profile gallopers in years past. Scales Of Justice (2019), Vega Magic (2018), and Ability (2017) all added their names to the honour roll, alongside Lord Of The Sky in 2016 and Smokin’ Joey in 2015.

Baraqiel, trained by Leon and Troy Corstens in partnership with W Larkin and ridden by Ben Allen, heads the market at $2.70. Close behind is Bridal Waltz at $5.50, prepared by Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, with Ben Melham in the saddle. New York Lustre, trained by Enver Jusufovic and to be ridden by Jamie Mott, is also well supported at $7.50.

Recommendation

Recommendation, for Ciaron Maher and jockey John Allen, sits at $8.50, while Kin, from the James Cummings stable with Craig Williams aboard, is listed at $8.50.

Other Contenders

Other contenders include Kallos ($15.00), also from the Cummings yard and partnered with Ethan Brown, and Inhibitions ($12.00), another Godolphin runner to be ridden by Jye McNeil. Others in the field are Yellow Sam ($9.00), trained by Lindsey Smith and ridden by Jamie Mott, and Apache Song ($26.00), trained by Michael Trotter and partnered with Blake Shinn.

Tips

The Pickabookie.com.au selection for the race is Inhibitions. With exceptional second-up form and having a 1/1 record over track and distance this Godolphin runner looks to be a ripper of a price at $12 to win and $3.40 to place.
