The Grand National 2025

What is The Grand National 2025?

The Grand National is a jumping race over steeplechases which is held every year at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, Merseyside, England.

It was first run in 1839 and is a handicap race over 4 miles and 2½ furlongs or approx. 6.9 kms. The horses and jockeys jump 30 fences over two- and a-bit laps of the famous course. It’s one of the most valuable jump races in the Northern Hemisphere with a prize pool of £1 million.

Biggest Race of the Year

Just like the Melbourne Cup it is the most anticipated race in British each year with millions of people either betting on the race or joining a sweepstake.

The race features some of the largest fences including The Chair, The Water Jump, Becher’s Brook, Foinavon and the Canal Turn, making it one of the toughest races in the world to win.

Recent Grand National Winners

In recent years the race has been dominated by Irish-trained winners including last year when I Am Maximus won for trainer Willie Mullins at odds of $8, he was the favourite to win.

In 2021 Rachael Blackmore became the first woman to win the race when she won on board Minella Times.

Tiger Roll

The race is so tough the same horse barely ever wins it twice let alone two years in a row, but this happened recently when Tiger Roll won in both 2018 and 2019 for trainer Gordon Elliott.

Before that you must go back to the famous Red Run who won the race in 1973 and 1974 before finishing as runner-up in the next two years, he then won again in 1977 to complete a unique hatrick of wins! His trainer was Ginger McCain who then went on to win the race again in 2004 when Amberleigh House won.

Who Will Win The 2025 Grand National?

Given how hard it is to win the race and pick the winner it is appropriate that the first ever winner of the race was called Lottery! For those who like to back grey horses the stats don’t make good reading as The Lamb, Nicolaus Silver, and Neptune Collonges are the only grey horses to have ever won the Grand National.

The Lamb won the race twice, in 1868 and 1871 then some 90 years later Nicolaus Silver followed in 1961. The most recent grey winner, Neptune Collonges, triumphed in 2012 so could it be time for another grey to win the race again this year…

Long Odds National Winners

The longest-odds winners of the Grand National are Tipperary Tim (1928), Gregalach (1929), Caughoo (1947), Foinavon (1967), and Mon Mome (2009), all of whom won at odds of 100/1.

These horses pulled off remarkable victories, defying the odds and becoming part of Grand National history. In 2022 Noble Yeats won at odds of 50/1 so don’t be afraid to look for some roughies to bet on in the race!

Tips for the Randox Grand National 2025

The Pickabookie.com.au selection for the race is Vanillier. The handicapper has given Vanillier a bit of a chance by dropping him nearly 2 kilos since last year, and so now he is on the same weight as when he finished second in 2023. If his efforts over Cross-Country races have got him into form then Vanillier has got a ripper of a chance of putting in another good run in this year’s Grand National.

Vanillier

In 2024 he ran a cracker in the Grand National, sitting in midfield about 4 fences out the grey put the pedal to the metal and flew up the run in, and finished second behind the winner Corach Rambler. Whilst last year Vanillier didn’t seem to have the same spark and ended up finishing a well-beaten back in about 15th place things look better again this time around.

This campaign in his third go at Punchestown, Vanillier did everything right and romped home to a stunning near 20-length win. His trainer Gavin Cromwell then sent him to the Cheltenham Festival for the Cross-Country race, but his jockey had a rough rider and nearly was forced to take the wrong course. He ended up giving away a fair few lengths trying to get back on track.

In the end, Vanillier finished a bloody impressive third, which was a cracking result considering the circumstances. If he hadn’t faltered there was every chance he would have caught the winner Stump Town which is the current favourite for the Grand National. With that form reference $12 looks a great each way bet and you should get a good run for your money. Hopefully this grey will become the fourth grey to win the race and you can be part of history by backing him!
