When Is The Melbourne Cup 2025?

The 2025 Melbourne Cup will be held on the 4th November at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse.

The 2025 Melbourne Cup Favourites

Did you know that since Makybe Diva won the race for a third time in 2005 that there has only been one winning favourite since then..? That was when Fiorente won the 2013 Melbourne Cup on 5th November at Flemington, delivering a landmark victory for trainer Gai Waterhouse, her first in the race.

Fiorente

The six-year-old stallion roared home to defeat the much-respected British runner Red Cadeaux. Ridden by the great Damien Oliver, Fiorente showcased his staying power and determination in a thrilling finish.

Gai Waterhouse

The win was particularly unique as it marked the first time a female Australian trainer officially claimed the Cup and certainly many punters were thrilled as the horse was the $7 favourite. Since then, many favourites have tried but none have succeeded.

Latest Preview & Tips for The Melbourne Cup

As we build up to the race that stops the nation there have been a few high profile scratchings including the favourite Sir Delius. This year’s Cox Plate runner up Buckaroo is also only 50/50 to go around. Locally trained runners Valiant King and Half Yours are vying for favouritism along with the Irish runner trained by Joseph O’Brien, Al Riffa.

After the shock of Knight’s Choice winning last year at $91 it shows that you cant rule out any runners to go well. This year our experts here at Pickabookie.com.au have lined up a few runners to consider ahead of the barrier draw which is made on Saturday 1st November. Having been well supported over the last couple of years Vauban has not been kind to his followers but since settling in Australia he has clearly got used to Aussie conditions and has managed to score a win as well as putting in some promising runs. At $41, far bigger than he has previously been offered, now under Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott he should not be forgotten about as they have had this race in mind for him.

James McDonald has elected to go on the import Meydaan and despite this UK runner having not won over the last 12 months he is worth an each way bet after a reasonable effort in the Caulfield Cup.  The other runner coming out of the Caulfield Cup which our experts are very keen to support is Valiant King. His third place was very commendable having also won the Bart Cummings earlier in October. He appears to have come back a rejuvenated horse this spring having been something of a disappointment last year when finishing down the field in this race. Champion trainer Chris Waller and his team appear to have had this race in mind and our experts are putting this up as the top tip in the race.

Value seekers who are looking to support another roughie going well this year might want to have a bet on Changingoftheguard – the Kris Lees trained runner is a former Royal Ascot winner and showed decent improvement second up this spring in the Geelong Cup, at odds of about $101 this looks the one to be on in youre looking for a runner at decent odds.

Finally – the horse which appears to have been forgotten this time around is Absurde. The Willie Mullins trained runner finished 5th last year without a prep run in Australia. This year he had a pipe cleaner when sent around in the Caulfield Cup which could have fresehened him up nicely. At odds of about $20 this appears to be a huge price and if he gets a decent draw expect him to go off a lot shorter come race day.
