The Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas 2025 Preview

What is The Rosehill Guineas?
The Rosehill Guineas is one of the most intriguing Group 1 races in the Australian racing calendar and worth $750k. It was first run in 1910 and is held annually at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, on Champions Day.
It is one of the feature race for three-year-old colts and geldings run over 2,000 metres. The race has been a key stepping stone for many future champions as is the second leg of the Sydney Autumn Carnival’s Triple Crown for three-year-olds. The race sits between the Randwick Guineas over 1600 metres and the Australian Derby which is over the longer trip of 2400 metres.
Rosehill Guineas History
Over the years, the Rosehill Guineas has developed a rich history, attracting the best horses in Australia and New Zealand. The race has seen incredible performances from the likes of horses such as Kingston Town, who won in 1980, and more recently, The Autumn Sun in 2018, the popular Anamoe for Godolphin in 2022 and in 2024 it was won by the exceptional Riff Rocket who charged home down the middle of the track in what was a thriller.
Early Odds
Currently Broadsiding is clear favourite at about $2 for trainer James Cummings and Godolphin and is expected to be one of jockey James McDonald’s best chances on the card. Swiftfalcon and Goldrush Guru both are on the next line of betting at $5. With the Chris Waller-trained Aeliana the only other runner in single figures at $7. Checkmate, over from New Zealand is one to note at $18.
Tips for The Rosehill Guineas 2025
The Pickabookie.com.au pick for the race is, Broadsiding but you should also include the Kiwi runner Checkmate in your numbers as he could be something special. His co-trainer Andrew Scott reckons his runner is something of punt as there is a question as to whether his gelding will handle the 2000m trip. Having finished third behind over 1500m in The Kiwi, and with rain in the air in Sydney he could offer more value to place than the favourite to win. Recommendation is to play a quinella on these two runners.
