Previous Winners of the South Australian Derby

Over the years, the South Australian Derby has produced some outstanding winners. One of the most famous is Subzero, who claimed victory in 1992 before going on to take out the Melbourne Cup the following season on a rain-soaked track. He also captured the Group 1 Adelaide Cup, cementing his place in Aussie racing folklore.

Rebel Raider

Another standout was Rebel Raider, who took out the Derby in 2009 after already impressing punters with a win in the VRC Derby, proving his class over the longer trips.

While traditionally dominated by colts and geldings, fillies have also made their mark on the South Australian Derby with Delicacy, who in 2015 achieved the impressive feat of winning both the Australasian Oaks and the South Australian Derby.

Last year it was also won by a filly as Coco Sun secured a narrow victory over Warmonger, trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Coco Sun was ridden by South Australian-born jockey Jamie Kah, who celebrated her first Group 1 win in her home state.
