What is The TJ Smith Stakes?

The TJ Smith Stakes is one of the more eagerly awaited races in the Autumn Racing Carnival, held every year at Royal Randwick in Sydney. Named after the legendary trainer TJ Smith, who was known for his expertise with sprinters, it’s a top-tier race that attracts the best of the best. The race covers 1,200 metres and usually runs in April. As a Group 1 race it now has a prize pool of $3 million AUD and is one of the richest sprint races in the country.

Race History

The inaugural race in 1997 was known as the Endeavour Stakes. However, in 1999, the race was renamed the TJ Smith Stakes in honour of the legendary trainer Thomas John Smith. Smith was a true icon of Australian racing, having won 33 racing titles in Sydney, and his legacy is celebrated through this prestigious race. 

Recent Winners

Recent winners of the race have included Nature Strip who won it for three consecutive years between 2020 and 2022. Prior to that it was the amazing Chautauqua who won it three times in a row between 2015 and 2017. The last of his wins being one of the most astonishing race victories that Randwick has ever witnessed. Chain of Lightning caused a shock last year winning the race at $21.
